Expert advice

Before you buy

The questions our stores get asked most about cooking outdoors.

Gas, wood or multi-fuel?

Gas lights in a minute and holds temperature while you feed people. Wood gives you the flavour and the theatre. Multi-fuel lets you swap, which is why it is the safest first oven.

How big should my pizza oven be?

A 12-inch oven suits two people and a small stoep. Sixteen inches lets you cook a proper 40cm pizza and roast in it, but it needs a permanent spot and a stand.

What do I actually need for a braai?

Long tongs, a spatula, a probe thermometer and a board you can carve on. Everything after that — skewers, baskets, braai rings — is about the way you cook, not the basics.

What makes a good travel flask?

Double-walled vacuum steel, a lid that seals rather than clicks, and a mouth wide enough to get ice or a bottle brush in. Colour is the last decision, not the first.

Outdoor cooking at Cookin

Cooking outdoors in South Africa is rarely a quick meal. It is a Saturday that starts with lighting the fire and ends with people still sitting at the table. Our outdoor range is built around that: pizza ovens from Ooni and Gozney that reach full heat in twenty minutes, braai tools long enough to work over real coals, and solid timber boards that carry a leg of lamb from the fire to the table without ceremony.

Alongside the fire you will find outdoor cookware — paella pans, cast iron skillets and griddles, roasting pans and jaffle irons — plus portable coffee makers and hand grinders for camping and early starts, and insulated flasks and travel mugs that keep coffee hot through a morning on the road. Cooler boxes and bags round it off for entertaining outdoors, whether that is the stoep, the beach or a farm dam.
